The Sian Ka'an reserve was declared a protected natural area by UNESCO in 1991 due to the great biodiversity it harbors within its more than 1,360,000 acres. In this reserve lies the archaeological site of Muyil, which was an important urban center dedicated to the trade of various objects such as cocoa, feathers, jade, and of course, salt.
Join us as we venture into the jungle and marvel at the nature and culture that this place has to offer. Once we pick you up at your hotel, we'll drive you to the Muyil ruins site where we'll take a guided tour and talk about Mayan culture and its primary characteristics.
Once we finish exploring the archaeological site, we'll head into the trail where we can observe the transition between the high jungle and the mangrove area, finally reaching the Chunyaxché Lagoon. Right there at the deck, we'll board a share boat that will cross the lagoon to take us to the Mayan canal, which was once used as a trade route between the mainland and the sea, but now we use it to enjoy and marvel at the nature of Sian Ka'an.
